Sophia's flower garden first birthday party!

I just can't believe our baby girl is a whole year old! We decided to go with a super girly flower garden theme for her birthday party, and invited pretty much all our friends to come and celebrate our sweet Sophia!

As I've mentioned before, we had a really fun themed photoshoot for her party invitation.  And I think it came out super cute!  As is becoming par for the course for me, I found a designer on Etsy to put together the party decorations for me -- and just look at the beautiful invitation she created!

The rest of the party decor was in pinks and greens, playing off the colors in the invitation.  I tried my hand at a cake I found on Pinterest, complete with little fondant daisies (my first attempt at working with fondant), and put together more pink and green desserts and snacks (pink frosted sugar cookie bars, caramel-dipped green grapes, pink liners for muffins and cupcakes).  And I strung up some pink and green streamers to hide the messiness of our dining room shelving.  ;)

So many friends came over to celebrate Sophia's birthday with us!  I had hoped to have some overflow space out our back door, but it was gloomy and rainy that morning, so we ended up being a bit, um, cozy indoors.  :)  But I think everyone had a good time hanging out -- and Sophia enjoyed seeing everyone!  Once she woke up, that is.  :)

And of course, the best part of a first birthday party: baby's first taste of CAKE!!

What a fun party!  Happy birthday to our sweet little girl!

Joshua's 2nd birthday party! Trains!!

We decided to put off throwing Joshua a birthday party until after David recovered from the (very good, but very intense) PEF/Manna winter retreat at the end of January, so we held this party on February 11.  And because Joshua's big Christmas/birthday present from us this year was a train table, and because he had been obsessed with his train toys and train books for months, choosing a party theme was a no-brainer!

Instead of designing all the party paper goods myself, I ended up buying a personalized set of printables from a really talented Etsy designer, Anders Ruff.  And I was really pleased with how it all turned out!  It was nice to have a fully coordinating set of party items, from the invitation to the birthday banners and food and drink decorations -- the OCD party planner in me was very, very happy.  :)

With the decorations pretty much taken care of for me (all I had to do was print, cut out, and assemble), I got to throw myself into the party baking.  This is actually the one part of party planning about which David kind of has an opinion -- his family always had homemade birthday cakes, so if and when it's possible, he'll always prefer a homemade cake over a store-bought one.  So I started Googling for train cake ideas back in January, and found a Wilton 3D cake pan and some frosting design ideas that I thought looked easy enough for me to try... And I also made up a batch of cupcakes in case the train cake was a total fail!

As it turns out, it was a good thing we had cupcakes, because the birthday boy didn't really like the idea of cutting into "his" big train!  Though we did end up slicing it up for small group the next day, when he wasn't really looking.  :)

We had invited a number of Joshua's friends (and their parents) to come party with us -- but that was the week that the gastroenteritis epidemic hit Princeton.  Many of the kiddos were out of commission that weekend, so we ended up having a slightly smaller party than planned.  But I think that was ultimately a good thing -- we still had five toddlers and a baby, which was more than enough chaos for one little apartment.  And even more importantly, we had just enough locomotives for each toddler to have one of his/her own.  :)

The kids also all loved poring over Joshua's books, finding many a willing parent lap to snuggle in and reading stories together.  Seriously, how cute are these little groupings??

And then Joshua got to relive that wondrous moment last year when he had his very first bite of cake.  :)

We all had such a wonderful time celebrating our dear little man.  It's hard to believe he's already two!  We're so blessed to have such a sweet, loving, fun-filled, rambunctious toddler, and we can't wait to see how he continues to grow and develop in the coming years!

The big 3-0!

David's birthday party last night was a rip-roaring success -- thank you to all of our wonderful friends for coming to celebrate with us!

I had so much fun decorating our apartment with the Star-Wars-as-30th-birthday-party theme:

"30" streamers courtesy of the Beesons;
Millennium Falcon and TIE fighter printed out from the interwebs

Super cheesy Star Wars plastic tablecovers

Framed pictures of David as a little boy;
plastic lightsabers borrowed from the Dorini boys

The little kids loved playing with the lightsabers:

Jeremy, age 4, and Lydia, age 6

And so did the big kids:

Dan, age 23, and John, age 27

And the pièce de résistance: the Death Star cake!

We put the candles in the Death Star part of the cake, to represent its explosion. And we put one in the laser itself, just because it looked cool. :)

See -- all cake inside!

David's brother Iain came down for the party, all the way from Poughkeepsie!

And he brought his lovely girlfriend Erin, who we got to meet for the first time.

We had so many people show up -- from our small groups, from YAC, from PEF staff... It was a nice melding of our many little worlds here in Princeton.

Steven and Hilary came dressed up!!

And we also had some surprise guests -- old friends we haven't seen in ages!

Pearson, up from Duke for a conference -- we hadn't seen him in a year and a half!

And Saunders came down from the city with Pearson -- so good to see him, too!

Erik brought his pop-up Star Wars book as a contribution to the decorations -- it was a huge hit!

And Jason and Damara gave David a Star Wars lego kit!

Steven and Hilary promptly opened the kit and constructed it for us

Demonstrating the warning in the instructions...

The kit was complete with a mini Darth Vader!

People stayed at our apartment into the wee hours -- until almost midnight!! Which, frankly, is crazy late for old fogies like us...

What a wonderful way to celebrate David's birthday! Thanks again, everyone -- we love you all!
