A new family photo!

(I know, I know, I have such a huge blog backlog to get through... And hopefully will find time for a good old-fashioned blog burst sometime soon, and will back-date all those posts.  But here's something we've been dying to share for a while now!)

Expected due date: August 9, 2012.  :)

20-week ultrasound: It's a ...

We had our 20-week ultrasound this morning -- the "big" ultrasound, the anatomy scan.

The ultrasound itself was a long (and very ticklish) one -- about half an hour of the tech scanning various points of the baby's body, examining and measuring the major organs, and pointing out key parts of the baby's anatomy to us. One of the coolest parts was getting to see the four chambers of the heart, merrily pumping away -- we could see the walls separating the chambers, looking something like a tripod jumping up and down as the chambers expanded and contracted. It was such an incredible miracle to watch!

But perhaps the very coolest part was the gender scan. :) Our little KeddieCub is a

BOY!!!

How incredibly exciting! We got to see our son this morning...

[[UPDATE: Sonograms!]] Here are two of our favorite photos from the ultrasound! In the first, you can clearly see his hand up next to his head, in an almost thoughtful sort of pose -- he's already a ponderer! :) And the second shows his head and torso -- it's a stillshot of when the ultrasound tech was moving in to measure his heart, I believe. We didn't get a shot of the four chambers pumping away, but that's certainly not something we're going to forget in a hurry!

It's amazing to compare these sonograms with those from our 12-week ultrasound -- he's growing so quickly!! (And there's no doubt about it now: he's definitely got David's nose. :) My mom in particular was very excited about that...)

We also have pictures proving that our little KeddieCub is, in fact, a boy -- but we decided out of respect for our son's privacy, we'll refrain from posting any such pictures on the interwebs. The kid deserves at least that much respect!

It also looks like everything is developing on track -- the ultrasound tech is sending her scans and report to my OB/GYN, who will let us know if there's any reason why she might want us to have any further scans, but the tech (and the doctor at the maternal/fetal ward where we have our ultrasounds) commented that everything looked good. Our son is measuring at exactly 20 weeks, 2 days, so he's right on track!

David and I celebrated by going out to lunch, and then buying a ridiculously adorable little blue onesie for our son. :)

We're so thankful for the good ultrasound, and incredibly excited to meet our little boy!!

I think the baby has David's nose

On Tuesday morning, we had our first trimester screening test. My doctor's practice offers this test as an initial predictor of chromosomal abnormalities like Down Syndrome and Trisomy 18. The test consists of an ultrasound, where the tech takes measurements of a fluid-filled space in the baby's neck, and a finger-prick blood test.

To be honest, David and I didn't really care about the diagnostic aspects of this test. Whatever the results, we knew that we would love and cherish this baby. The only reason why we decided to go through with this was so that we could get another chance to see the baby. :)

And wow! What a difference 6 weeks makes! Our first ultrasound, which was taken at 6 weeks, 3 days, basically showed a little blob with a flickering heartbeat -- thrilling, but still clearly very early in the pregnancy. This week's ultrasound was something else altogether...

The first sonogram is of the whole baby -- he's lying on his back, waving his arms and legs in the air. (Side note: nope, we don't know the gender of the baby yet, but it's much easier referring to him as a "him," rather than a "him or her" -- and I absolutely refuse to call our baby an "it"!) You can actually make out all five fingers on one of his hands -- during the ultrasound, it looked like he was waving at us!

The second sonogram is a zoomed in shot of his head and upper torso. He's got one of his hands near his head -- it looked like he was trying to get his hand into his mouth. :) And what's even more thrilling is that you can make out facial features in this one -- he's already got the beginnings of a cute little button nose!

It's incredible that the baby's features are already so developed -- he's got arms and legs, and fingers and toes, and a face, and everything! Even though he's still only the size of a plum! What an incredible sight!

As you can probably tell, I'm still riding the emotional high from seeing the baby this time. :) The icing on this cake is that we got a call from the nurse today, letting us know that all of the tests were within normal limits.

I know I've said this before, but I'm so thankful for each new milestone, every small step along the path of this whole pregnancy thing becoming more real to us. There really is a baby in there -- and he's the cutest little thing in the world! :)
